The Windsor chair has remained in demand in a way no other chair design has as shown here.  It is easy to see the appeal of these chairs: hardwearing, comfortable, elegant and cheap to make and look well in any non formal setting.  There are several varieties of the chair, but all have one structural feature in common that being the saddle-shaped seat which holds all the spindles in place.  The practice of bending wood became common towards the middle of the 18th century giving the hoop-shaped framework of the back. The 'H' stretcher, too, was given a Crinoline shape.

The Windsor chair is usually found to be made of a mixture of up to five different woods.  These include, Elm, favoured for the seat and Beech for the legs, but Ash, Yew, Birch and Fruitwood would be freely used for other parts.  In general the country craftsman would use whatever woods that came easiest to hand.

In the 18th and early 19th centuries Windsors were often left natural, unpolished (Blond), however, some were painted dark green or black
