This painted Dower Chest (Wedding Chest) is in the style of the Dutch or "Pennsylvania Dutch" of the 1780's. it's made of soft yellow pine and polychrome decoration of tulips and other flowers is lavishly applied in three panels on the front and a garland of leaves on the inside lip. The chest is painted in a earth tone radish/brown pigment. There is also a candle box with lid to the left side
The structural condition of the chest is sound but it does show age related usage. A one inch strip on the top back edge of the casement has been replaced, it is also missing the hinges leaving the lid unattached. The original lock an ecscutcheon plate or still in place but sadly no key.
The chest show evidence of past woodworm infestation. This has been treated by us and there is no current evidence of active woodworm.
